Gossips

Sound installation consisting of sculptures made using hydroforming techniques, elements of recycled steel and aluminium, plastic pipes, speakers, Raspberry Pi, and sound transducers, 2025, various dimensions.

The project addresses alternative methods of communication. Seven stories collected from artists and researchers from Poland and the Balkans circulate through a system of pipes and resonators in the form of voice recordings. In Middle English, the word gossip meant a close friend who took part in family life; over time it acquired gendered connotations and, as Silvia Federici notes, became a tool for setting women against one another. In Polish, plotka (gossip) evokes the image of words being braided together. This multilayered nature of language inspires an analysis of gossip as a tactic of weak resistance (E. Majewska), balancing between truth and fiction. The work explores female community, intimacy, and care as forms of cultural resistance. The pipes distributing sound evoke hidden infrastructures and intimate ways of transmitting knowledge. The installation also included plywood sound boxes with PVC pipes that served as sound sources. Cables and pipes were integrated into the space, creating a network that interfered with the exhibition site. A digital online platform, forming part of the installation Gossip, explores female communication through the creation of an interactive archive of gossip - whispered, distorted stories passed on orally. Users can anonymously share their stories in audio or text form, mark their geographical context, and co-create a feminist repository of micro-narratives.
